KEEP YOUR
SEPTIC SYSTEM HEALTHY
The
Public Utilities Department reminds all citizens that a healthy septic system is
vitally important to your home and equally important to
our groundwater system of aquifers. We recommend a simple set of steps (do’s
and don’ts) to maintain a healthy system.
DO…
..have you’re your tank pumped and system inspected every 3-5 years;
..keep a record of pumping, inspections and other maintenance;
..practice conservation – repair dripping faucets or leaky toilets; run washing
machines & dishwashers only when full; use water-saving plumbing devices;
..learn the location of your septic system and drain field;
..take leftover hazardous household chemicals to an appointed collection center
for disposal: use bleach, disinfectants & toilet bowl cleaners sparingly and by
labels.
DON’T…
..allow driving or parking over any part of the system; the drain field should
be undisturbed with only a moved grass cover;
..use your toilet as a trashcan by dumping non-degrading materials;
..poison your system and the groundwater by pouring harmful chemicals down
drains;
..pour grease down the drain or flush diapers or plastics;
..pour paint, oil, gas, paint thinner, pesticides or antifreeze down the drain;
rather, take to an approved collection system.
Thank you !!
